Visiting the renovated downtown Portland area is a fun overnight trip. They are still working on the old harbor area. Folks stayed at the Holiday Inn downtown; the courtesy van will pick you up and drop you off at the airport. From the Inn you can walk downtown. Best buy was the lobster dinner at the Holiday Inn for $9.95. (11/89)

Great little restaurant just outside the airport where they cook any lobster you choose. Better yet, rent a car (several dealers available) and go into town (on Mount Desert Island) and, preferably, stay a few days. The scenery is outstanding: Cadillac Mountain is the tallest mountain on the East Coast (literally ON the East Coast and you can walk in the clouds (the fog and clouds drift together at the top). You can watch the lobster boats go out from Frenchman’s Bay or take a ride with them, and then visit the lobster hatchery. If you still can bear to eat one after watching all those little baby lobsters, you can get one fresh off the boats and eat it at the wharf. Be sure to visit Acadia National Park. There are many beautiful walks at Jordan Pond, and your reward is the very best Lobster Bisque ever. (gv/ked/dd/md 9/94)

This is a beautiful area to visit. It is really beach country. There is lots to see ... Kennebunkport, Ogunquit and Wells. All are within 15 mi of SFM. Rent a car at the friendly FBO, General Aviation (122.8). We did just that in mid October and visited Ogunquit (Beautiful Place By The Sea) ... and it certainly was! There, we visited Perkins Cove, a hill and rock-enclosed inlet. There is a 1 mile waterfront trail, Marginal Way, leading from Ogunquit to Perkins Cove. At Perkins Cove, there is no shortage of seafood restaurants, art galleries, or shops to browse. Because this area is beach country, it is reported to be heavily-trafficked in season. (gv/ked 3/95)

A small, friendly airport near the very popular Kennebunkport area. When we flew in for the weekend (7/26/02), there were no landing or tie down fees, and 100LL was priced at $2.45. If you need a rental car, you can call Enterprise in Saco. They will come to the airport to pick you up, and drop you off when it's time to leave. Be careful, though, since Enterprise is closed on Sundays!

While there, be sure to visit downtown Kennebunkport! There is shopping and plenty of good food in town. Be sure to check out Federal Jack's brew pub for a good meal. Or, if you want something a little less glamorous, go to the world famous Clam Shack!

Portland is also about a 25 minute drive away. There you can explore the Old Harbor area, antique shops, restaurants, brew pubs, and nautical shops. A very interesting place to spend a day! (Clint Robson)
